Black History Month Spotlight on Special Olympics Athlete Abel Mehari

Abel Mehari competed in Unified Basketball at World Games, winning a gold medal.

"I was surprised [being chosen for Team USA] but feel that I'm gaining recognition. Basketball can be a platform for troubled youth to express their skills," said the 22-year-old Shakopee, Minn., resident.

Mehari likes writing sports articles, listening to music and shooting hoops.

"Special Olympics is a great thing to have on my resume for college. It allows me to stay active and I can use my talents."
