Just hours before WWE takes over the STAPLES Center for SummerSlam, WWE Superstars Cody Rhodes and Hornswoggle joined forces with the Pearson Foundation and We Give Books at Nokia Plaza at L.A. LIVE for a SummerSlam Reading Celebration.

Sixty-five children and their families gathered with the WWE fan favorites before SummerSlam Axxess to celebrate literacy. The Superstars read the children’s book “Otis” to those in attendance, and encouraged the children to continue reading beyond that afternoon.

“You go off in your imagination when you read,” Hornswoggle later explained on why he likes to read. “I hope the kids came away with how important reading is, whether it’s a magazine or book or newspaper, as long as you’re reading something.”

After they finished the book, Rhodes and Hornswoggle talked with the children about the lessons they could learn from “Otis” on how to be a good friend.

“The book is all about friendship,” Rhodes commented later, drawing a parallel between the story in front of him and his imminent showdown at SummerSlam. No matter what hurdles or obstacles – whether it about a big yellow tractor or – in my case – Damien Sandow.”

The Superstars and children then made masks, which they wore in the plaza. The kids and their families then got to enjoy SummerSlam Axxess, checking out live matches and meeting their favorite Superstars on a beautiful California day.
